Esteemed Chairman of Festival Higher Board
My esteemed Friends
First of all, I would like to express that I am extremely glad to be here together with you in this important and respectful activity organized by Sharjah Emirate.
Though being the most valuable area of the Islamic civilization, the art is unfortunately no more respected and appreciated as it deserves. Recently, when it comes to Islam on the world, the first thing that comes into minds of people is unfortunately no more any good thought.
However, the thing which should represent our civilization outside and should first come into minds of people should be our strong and aesthetic arts.
That is why I find this meeting a very good and valuable opportunity.
Our civilization is indeed a written civilization.
And the first commandment of the Koran is “read”. The calligraphy, as the act of writing of our holy scripture, the Koran, is of an unprecedented and matchless beauty and depth. And the branches of art used to ornament this calligraphy, i.e. the illuminated manuscript is one of the most elegant and aesthetic branches of art of the whole world.
Since 1400 years, the Muslims have always worked their magic in order to further develop, beautify and anesthetize our calligraphy art.
That is why in all states included in the Islamic civilization in the history, very valuable copies of the Koran have been hand-written, and all of these treasure-like Korans are presently being exhibited in our museums and mosques.
All ornaments and writings of our mosques and other architectural works looked with great admiration by everyone visiting the Muslim countries today are a result and product of this historical depth indeed.
Again in the contemporary copies of the Koran hand-written in our day and in our modern scientific works, you may easily find the traces of this marvelous art of our civilization.
This is our aspect which we have to further strengthen, promote, introduce and publicize to the whole world, because art is the best thing which may really represent our, i.e. the Muslims and the whole Islamic world. Neither terrorism, nor poverty, nor economic underdevelopment may be the real image, identity or distinguishing character of the whole Islamic world.
The Science, Culture and Art Association, presided by me, is carrying out very important activities in Istanbul for the purposes cited above.
We hope that these activities conducted under guidance of the great calligraphist and scientist Hüseyin Kutlu will introduce our arts and civilization to the whole world.
Calligraphist Hüseyin Kutlu could not attend this meeting due to his health problems, but he asked me to transmit his regards and compliments to you.
I am going to finish my speech by mentioning briefly about our two important projects.
The first of these projects is an art garden being established on a land of 16 decares in Istanbul.
It features and includes a mosque of the Ottoman architecture, an Islamic dervish monastery with historical characteristics, mansions and art tents.
We have designed an Islamic garden architecture in this area projected as an art complex. The garden will feature pools, a medicinal herbs section and a bird palace.
In this campus, we are training students in our traditional arts. We are giving courses in 16 different branches, particularly calligraphy, illuminated manuscript, music and water marbling. At present, we have around 700 students.
The campus will be opened for service with full capacity this year. We are going to accept local and foreign visitors to the campus. Furthermore, by ensuring that the foreign statesmen coming to Turkey visit our campus, we are going to introduce our civilization and arts to them. Of course, we are also expecting you to visit our art garden when you come to Turkey.
Our second important project is a Koran writing project.
The Mushaf, being written by Calligraphist Hüseyin Kutlu on handmade papers, contains the most important and leading examples of our calligraphy history of 1400 years.
The Mushaf, when completed, will comprise of 10 volumes, and each volume will represent a separate era of the Islamic civilization. This artwork will then be exhibited in the form of a portable museum in other countries of the world.
The Mushaf project continuing since 3 years is projected to be completed in two years ahead.
I will be very glad to exchange views and enter into cooperation with you about our projects mentioned hereinabove.
Before finishing my speech, I would like to express my gratitude to Sharjah Emirate, Ministry of Culture and organization team for their inviting us, and I wish to greet you with my best regards.
